The Institute for Welding and Quality (ISQ) is an independent, private, non-profitable, technical, scientific and industrial oriented organization founded in 1965. More than 80% of its income comes from its international operation in Europe and abroad. ISQ’s main activities include technical inspections, consultancy, training, testing and R&D in a range of areas as Materials, Environmental Technologies, Health and Safety, Energy, Metrology, Quality Assurance, Industrial Automation and Robotics, Structural integrity and Risk assessment and a range of sectors as oil&gas, aeronautics and aerospace, process industries, energy and power generation, civil engineering, healthcare and medical, construction and infrastructures.

ISQ’s know-how is supported by a network of more than 20 accredited laboratories and a large involvement in National, European and International R&D projects and a long history of collaboration with many different Universities, Scientific Research Institutes, companies and other institutions in more than 30 countries worldwide.

ISQ is nowadays a group owing 37 companies in Portugal and abroad. Some of them are spin-offs from its core activity, and in other cases, the result of new opportunities and/or of its own benchmarking..

The National Health Institute Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) develops its activity as State Laboratory of the health sector, National Reference Laboratory and National Health Observatory. Its main mission is to contribute to gains in public health, either on the laboratory area or through specialized health care, to provide the Ministry of Health with the adequate data for knowledge-based decision-making essential to define the national health policy, to follow the guidelines defined by the Ministry of Health and to answer the questions raised by the scientific community and the society.

INSA ensures its mission through research and technological development, epidemiological and health services research, laboratory quality assurance through external evaluation, diffusion of scientific culture, fostering capacities, knowledge and skills through training programs and by providing specialized services in several domains including the prevention of genetic diseases.

INSA develops several R&D activities on the health sciences domain, with a special focus on epidemiology, environmental health, food and nutrition, genetics, proteomics, health services, infectious diseases, chronic diseases and health promotion.

The Portuguese Institute for Quality (IPQ) is a public institute integrated into the indirect administration of the State under the superintendence and responsibility of the Ministry of Economy, endowed with administrative and financial autonomy and its own assets subject to Decree Law nº. 71/2012, enacted on 21th Mars and Decree Order nº 23/2013, enacted on 24th January which approve its organic structure and articles of association, respectively. IPQ´s Mission is to ensure the coordination of the Portuguese Quality System and of other regulatory conformity assessment systems conferred upon it by law; the promotion and coordination of activities which seek to contribute to demonstrating the credibility of the action of economic agents, as well as the carrying out of the activities inherent in its duties as the National Metrology Institute and the National Standardization Body.

In international terms, IPQ ensures the representation of Portugal in the relevant structures, to wit the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

The Portuguese General Directorate of Human Health (DGS) is a public administration body responsible for the implementation of national policies aiming to promote public health, taking into account healthy standards of life and a safe environment. DGS main goal is to provide policy advise for decision-makers based on sound scientific arguments and furthermore to provide information to professionals and the general public. DGS perform numerous tasks as national coordinator competent authority for the Biocides and REACH namely, performing chemical human health risk assessments and hazard classification and labelling (CLP).
